One day, two girls walked to the coast. They were astonished to see the sea and thought it would taste like water. The girls found a coconut on the beach.
It is one of four living species of the order Sireniawhich also includes three species of manatees. It is the only living representative of the once-diverse family Dugongidae ; its closest modern relative, Steller's sea cow Hydrodamalis gigaswas hunted to extinction in the 18th century. The dugong is the only strictly herbivorous marine mammal.
In the Spermonde as in the other main island groups around Sulawesi, seagrass and coral ecosystems are intimately linked ecologically and overlap extensively on the shallow water shelves surrounding most islands. One keystone species living in these shallow waters is the dugong Dugong dugon. Opportunities for dugong conservation, and potential benefits for coral reef ecosystems in a small island socio-ecological context, were considered.
Dugongs Dugong dugonalso known as sea cows, have a broad but fragmented range, encompassing tropical waters from East Africa to Vanuatu, about 26 degrees both north and south of the equator. This range spans at least 48 countries and aboutkm of tropical coastline. The second largest population is found in the Arabian Gulf.
The female reproductive system in marine mammals is composed of the basic mammalian reproductive organs: ovaiy, oviduct, uterus, cervix, vagina, clitoris, and vaginal vestibule. Under control of the endocrine system, these organs are engaged in the reproductive cycle of ovulation, fertilization, implantation, fetal growth, and parturition. Ancillary to reproduction are the mammary glands and lactation.

Like other large aquatic animals, dugongs are threatened directly and indirectly by human activities. Their population appears to have shrunk by at least one fifth over the past few centuries, and they have disappeared in some parts of their historic range, mainly due indigenous hunting and the loss of their habitats 1. Read on to find out about the general description, habitat, interesting behaviors and many other fascinating facts about these lovely sirens of the sea!
Despite their languid nature and bulky bodies, manatees are surprisingly graceful in their watery habitat. But do the mating behaviors of these so-called sea cows rival the elegance of synchronized swimmers, or are the mammals even more cowlike than meets the eye? But by and large the animals only come together to mate, said Iskande Larkin, a manatee researcher at the University of Florida.
The order Sirenia includes the only mammals that are both fully aquatic and herbivorous. The members of this order possess adaptations for both their habitat and their diet. For example, the large fusiform body is almost hairless; external appendages such as the hind limbs and external ear pinnae are absent; the pectoral flippers are reduced and paddlelike; and the tail is modified into a large paddle manatees or deeply notched flukes dugongs to facilitate locomotion through an aquatic medium.
